First phase of Albany Court opened by Housing Minister

Rt Hon John Healey MP Minister of State for Housing and Planning was invited to officially open the first phase of the £3.2 million re-development of Albany Court sheltered housing complex on a recent visit to Hartlepool.

Rt Hon John Healey MP Minister of State for Housing and Planning was invited to officially open the first phase of the £3.2 million re-development of Albany Court sheltered housing complex on a recent visit to Hartlepool.

Mr Healey had the chance to see the flats and then chatted with residents before unveiling a plaque to commemorate his visit.

The original bedsits are being converted into two bedroom apartments, with fully fitted kitchens, modern bathrooms and a host of other features. In addition, new apartments have also been built, designed with state of the art facilities for residents with disabilities, with the support of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.

The Albany Court revamp, due to be completed by November, has incorporated low-carbon green features including air source heat pumps, solar panels and low energy light fittings, ventilation heat recovery units, and a rainwater harvesting system in the development.

Mr Healey said: "The work that is being carried out by Housing Hartlepool is impressive.

"As well as improving the homes within the town, great strides are being made to ensure that schemes such as Albany Court, retain and enhance their area's strong community bonds, providing extra care services to help residents retain quality of life."

Cath Purdy, Housing Hartlepool Chief Executive, said: "Housing Hartlepool is proud to be involved in the new Housing Minister's first visit to the North East.

"Housing Hartlepool, in conjunction with its partner agencies, has forged a solid track record and reputation for top quality development projects.

"Where people live is fundamental to quality of life. With refurbished homes, which are economical to run, and fitted out to the highest standards - we are contributing to the regeneration of the town."

The Minister's concluded his visit by giving a key note speech at a celebration of 5 years of achievement by Housing Hartlepool, held at the Maritime Experience. This event coincided with Housing Hartlepool's Annual General Meeting.
